Asterales Granny Square
The Asterales Granny Square is a design a long time in the making. I first designed the flowery centre back in 2015. Since then, I had squared it off a couple of times but wasn’t happy with the result for one reason or another. Fast forward to September 2021 when I felt the need to try one more time and voila! We have Asterales.
The pattern is written for one colour as you see in my sample, but I’ve also included 37 different colour ways devised by some lovely folks you can use as is or as inspiration for your own colour play.
The pattern includes:
written pattern in both UK & US terminology
chart - right-handed and left-handed
link to video - right handed and mirrored for left-handers
A full glossary of all stitches and techniques used
37 colour options along with yarn and hook details for each
Asterales Granny Square Size
When made with 8 ply/DK/light worsted yarn and a 4.5 mm hook the Asterales granny square measures 30 cm/12 inches square.
You will need:
For my sample I used:
Yarn: Bendigo Woollen Mills Cotton Fibre: 100% cotton Weight: 8 ply / DK / light worsted Yardage: 485 m / 531 yds per 200 g Colour: Parchment Amount used: 54 g – 131 m / 144 yds Hook: 4.5 mm
The 37 alternate colour ways included state yarn weights, hook sizes and resulting square size for each option.
How to access the pattern
This is the digital PDF pattern. Your download link will be on the order confirmation screen, in your order confirmation email and in your account, if you have one.

Asterales Square
Beautiful Square but oh how confused I got with both US and UK instructions together on one page. I just need to sort it out again in my head as have always used both.
I have certainly had a lot of takes and still love it and will get back to it again.

Hi Judith! Glad you like the square. The UK and US terms written patterns are on separate pages of the PDF, so I am wondering how you were viewing it to see both on one page. I'd like to know if I need to make any adjustments to the PDF. Thank you!

Beautiful and fun
I really enjoyed making up this pattern. So far I have only made one block as I have a heap of other projects on the go. The pattern was easy to follow and I learnt some new techniques as well. I would recommend giving this pattern a try!

Asterales
Loved making my first Asterales square with this design! Easy to follow.
Had some trouble with the beginning/end flower point. Will make another square based on this design and hopefully will figure out how to make it look better. I have not blocked it yet.
Inspired by the Loopy Stitch warm color Salutations pic (Instagram Jan 14) using Style craft DK yarn.
